To blame this on unions, though, is pure folly. I live in South Texas, and you couldn't find a more anti union place in the US than here, but the problems are the same. I see TV as the primary culprit, closely followed by the fact that most kids are raised in daycare centers. However when we look at the United States as a whole, you will find that we are not in the top ten countries for reading, math or science. This number includes African Americans, Hispanics, European Americans, Asian Americans, etc.

When Michael Phelps was growing up, his mother had the resources and the mindset to put him into swimming. Some of the parents, I deal with wouldn't do that if the swimming pool was right across the street from their homes. They would still let their children sit on the porch under them, play video games or watch television. This is one of the results of having an illiterate mother who is the child's first teacher.

On the flip side, in some communities if Johnny is not doing well in school, he can work in his Uncle's contracting or landscaping business. Uncle can get him into the Plumber's Union. Now this is true and it has been talked about at various meetings across the city.

In the past, if the schools were bad, you had parents to make sure that certain things were going to be learned. In the past,if the schools were bad you could still get a job at the Big Three and make "middle class" income. Those days are gone and now we are forced to take a hard look at education and how we educate our children.

"Keep in mind these people vote, pay bills and run...

"Keep in mind these people vote, pay bills and run family households.
